People in Tasmania

Founded in 1804 as a penal colony, Hobart is Australia’s second-oldest capital city after Sydney and has a colonial feel with its many gracious buildings along the Derwent River estuary. Waterfront living is more affordable in Hobart than on the mainland. The locals love their festivals, which are held throughout the year with themes ranging from food and wine to choral music and the arts – and MONA Museum, a short ferry ride up the river, offers free entry for locals.

The Tasmania Lifestyle

The city has a mild, temperate oceanic climate, but snow can often be seen on the peak of Mount Wellington, which overlooks the city and offers bushwalking and mountain bike riding leisure opportunities. While Hobart used to be favoured by an older demographic, it is today a great favourite with tree changers and there are many university students. There is a wide choice of public and private schools.
